A Symbol of Hope Takes to the Track

19 Sep 2010

In 2009, Bronze medal world record holder at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, Jayme Paris, journeyed back to her birth and re-birth on a charity bike ride called "A Symbol of Hope" raising over $10,000 for Northcott.

It was the 27th of April 1989 when an emergency caesarean at Blacktown Hospital began the journey of Jayme Paris’ life. Born without a heartbeat, it was not until 10 minutes later that Jayme was registered as alive. Jayme needed a neonatal bed with specialist nurses and was transported to Mater Misericordia (now the John Hunter Hospital) in Newcastle. At Newcastle, Jayme made significant progress, experiencing a re-birth.

Jayme lives with cerebellar ataxia, a form of cerebral palsy, and though this means her balance is not very good and she often has shaking attacks, she championed ahead and is now a bronze medal world champion for cycling.

In 2010, Jayme will be taking her “A Symbol of Hope” bike ride to the track on Sunday 19 September for a 12 Hour Relay Ride on the Dunc Gray Velodrome, Bankstown.

With the support of Cycling NSW, Trivett Honda Classic and her family, Jayme hopes to raise over $10,000 for Northcott. To sponsor her, click here or to participate, please contact Carol Hanna (02) 9890 0954 or carol.hanna@northcott.com.au.
