In recognition of May Gibbs birthday on January 17 and in celebration of her Australian bush characters, Northcott Disability Services is encouraging the community to support children with disabilities this Australia Day by wearing a Gumnut Baby Badge.

May Gibbs, an icon of Australian children’s literature and one of the country’s most loved artists and authors, left copyright of all her works to Northcott Disability Services and The Spastic Centre of NSW.

Northcott Disability Services celebrates May’s birthday annually by creating Gumnut Baby Badges charity pins. This year, the charity pins show two gorgeous wattle babies cuddling on a wattle leaf. The pins are $5.00 each and will be available nationally from January 7 to February 8 2008 at all Corporate Express, Civic Video, Dymocks and Myer retail outlets.

Northcott’s Chief Executive Officer Glenn Gardner said the Gumnut Baby Badge program would support children with disabilities and their families, as well as raise the profile of May Gibbs.

“It is important to remember what a wonderful legacy May Gibbs left to children in need,” Mr Gardner said. “Purchasing a Gumnut Baby Badge will allow her legacy to continue, as well as support children with disabilities at the same time.”

Last year, the inaugural program raised $140,000 for Northcott Disability Services and The Spastic Centre of NSW.

Northcott Disability Services and The Spastic Centre of NSW are considered leaders in their field of support and service provision for children and adults with disabilities and their families.

Northcott Disability Services provides support to over 6000 people with disabilities and their families across NSW and the ACT. For further information contact (02) 9890 0100 or go to www.northcott.com.au.
